Approach
Florent Terracol’s work emerges from the encounter between elements that seem, at first, to be entirely opposed. Not to stage their opposition, but to reveal the force that arises when they coexist. Light and darkness, permanence and disappearance, use and abandonment, order and accident: these contrasts do not cancel each other out. Instead, they define, reinforce and bring one another into focus.
He explores a territory that might be described as accidental Baroque. A space in which the unexpected becomes a way of interpreting the world, where chance encounters give rise to images that no deliberate intention could have conceived. Florent is drawn to those moments when reality itself creates its own paradoxes, offering situations whose power stems precisely from their improbability.
His work explores the ability of everyday life to give rise to forms of beauty, tension and strangeness when heterogeneous realities come into contact. In the presence of its opposite, each element gains intensity, as though this proximity were revealing a truth that had until then remained invisible.
Transitional states play an essential role in this exploration. Construction sites, temporary installations, events, transformations and disappearances momentarily suspend the identity of a place. They create a breach in its permanence, revealing dimensions that would normally remain imperceptible. These moments of transition fascinate him because they make visible what so often escapes our gaze: a world in the process of becoming something else.
To preserve memory in a lasting form is to safeguard the trace of an ephemeral balance, of an improbable coexistence that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.
A world in the process of becoming something else.
